SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Savannah fire officials say preventing kitchen fires is the theme of this year's fire prevention week.
Officials say fire prevention week runs Monday through Oct. 12, and Savannah fire officials are putting extra emphasis on fire prevention during the month of October.
Fire prevention week is sponsored by the National Fire Prevention Association in memory of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which killed more than 250 people and destroyed more than 17,400 structures.
According to the NFPA, cooking fires are the number one cause of house fires and related injuries.
NFPA officials say those types of fires have accounted for 400 deaths and more than 5,000 injuries in the U.S. between 2007 and 2011.
