SUGAR HILL, GA (RNN) – Fire officials were called to an apartment complex on Thursday in response to a woman who was unconscious, WXIA reports.

When firefighters arrived, they found an obese woman covered in maggots and cockroaches that were eating her flesh. The woman’s legs were completely black and showing signs of decomposition, according to an incident report.

The bed on which the woman had been lying was surrounded by garbage, and the entire apartment was infested with cockroaches, the report states.

The same crew came to the home a month ago to take the woman from the hospital to the home using a "Mega Mover" tarp, which is used to move larger patients.

Police officials said when they returned on March 15, the woman was still on top of the white tarp they left, but it was now covered in feces and had turned brown and black in color.

According to WXIA, the Gwinnett County Fire Department stated that "they did not believe she would live much longer and felt a moral obligation to report this."

Police charged the woman's son and husband with neglect of a disabled or elderly person.
