Georgia will not have tax-free weekend for second straight year

VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - People in one south Georgia community are not happy to hear that tax-free weekend won't be taking place again for the second year in a row.

No breaks will be given again this year in Georgia as far as taxes are concerned, as tax-free weekend has officially been canceled.

Valdosta resident Roslyn Jean says it's disappointing to hear that the state has decided against giving folks a break, especially around the back to school time frame.

"It is cheating us out of another year of not getting a break, but who cares, you have a car put some gas in it, you can go to Tallahassee or anywhere else that has tax-free weekend," said Jean.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the tax-free weekend can cost state and local governments roughly $70 million in lost revenue.

A bill to bring back tax-free weekend failed in the General Assembly this year. Which in turn, could drive money out of the state.

A tax-free weekend would have helped families and teachers save on the state's four percent sales tax on school supplies
