ATLANTA (AP) — A Georgia Senate committee has approved a constitutional amendment and a bill allowing gambling on horse racing over objections from Democrats, who want some of the expected revenue used for need-based college aid.
Members of the Senate Regulated Industries panel backed the proposals on Wednesday after asking for several changes, including dedicated funding for gambling addiction programs.
Republicans on the panel also eliminated language allowing some racing revenue for need-based college aid programs. Senate Minority Leader Steve Henson objected and Democrats voted against both measures.
Supporters estimate the facilities could produce $15 million for the state.
Sponsoring state Sen. Brandon Beach, a Republican from Alpharetta, says he will need to get Democrats to clear the Senate. Constitutional amendments require approval from two-thirds of lawmakers before a statewide ballot.
