ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia's recent gas tax increase continues to boost the state's overall income.

Gov. Nathan Deal says the state collected nearly $1.97 billion in net taxes during September. That includes $74.3 million in transportation revenue, an 8.7 percent increase compared to the same figure last year.

Lawmakers increased the state's gas tax and several fees while cutting several tax credits, saying the state needed more funding to maintain its roads and bridges.

Deal says the state's total tax collections increased by $83.4 million compared to September 2014.
