JACKSON, Ga. (AP) — A Georgia inmate convicted of rape and murder has become the first person executed in the United States since the botched lethal injection of a prisoner in Oklahoma in April.

Authorities say 59-year-old inmate Marcus Wellons was pronounced dead at 11:56 p.m. EDT Tuesday after a one-drug injection of the sedative pentobarbital at the state penitentiary in Jackson.

Corrections officials reported no complications.

Wellons was convicted in 1993 of the rape and murder of his 15-year-old neighbor.
