ATLANTA (AP) - University System of Georgia officials say schools need to raise more money for athletics rather than depending on student fees or tuition.
A new policy approved Tuesday caps how much funding athletic programs can get from student fees or students' tuition. The amount is tied to each school's athletic association, allowing those in smaller organizations to depend more on student dollars than schools in NCAA divisions.
It also caps annual growth in athletic expenses.
The change has little effect on University of Georgia and Georgia Tech athletic programs, which have more donors and other resources. But six schools, including Georgia State University in Atlanta, have to lower their dependence on student money within four years.
College expenses remain a hot topic in Georgia, including pressure from state lawmakers this year.
