Convicted rapist accidentally released from Georgia prison

(WTXL) — Authorities are asking people to be on the lookout after a convicted rapist was accidentally released from prison.

The Georgia Department of Corrections says an Tony Maycon Munoz-Mendez was released "in error" from Rogers State Prison in Reidsville, Georgia. He is supposed to be serving a life sentence for rape and aggravated child molestation in Gwinnett County, Georgia.

"All resources are being utilized to ensure the rapid apprehension of Munoz-Mendez, including the Georgia Department of Corrections Fugitive Unit and US Marshals," wrote spokeswoman Lori Benoit. "The public is reminded to call 911, and do not approach."

Munoz-Mendez was sentenced to life in prison for a 2010 aggravated child molestation and rape as well as a rape in 2012. Authorities have not specified what error led to Munoz-Mendez's release.
