Georgia Man Pleads Guilty to Seeking to Join Islamic State

Posted

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - Leon Nathan Davis had a family and a sales job - and says he left it all last fall with a one-way ticket overseas to join the Islamic State group.

The 37-year-old Augusta, Georgia, man pleaded guilty Wednesday in U.S. District Court to a charge of attempting to provide support to a terrorist group. Davis told a judge he had a ticket last October to fly from Atlanta to Turkey, where he planned to cross into Syria and join Islamic State militants. FBI agents who'd been monitoring Davis arrested him at the airport.

Davis never said what motivated him during his 30-minute plea hearing. Georgia Department of Corrections records show he served several years in prison for cocaine trafficking. Federal prosecutors say Davis also went by the name Abdul Wakil Khalil.
