ADAMSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Authorities say a Georgia man was struck and killed by a pickup truck as he worked with a crew to clear trees and brush along a highway outside Birmingham.
The Jefferson County County Coroner's Office identified the worker as 48-year-old Kevin Eugene Gates of the Atlanta suburb of Chamblee. He was killed around 11:50 a.m. Saturday on Alabama 78 in Adamsville.
The Birmingham News reports (http://bit.ly/1daXiAZ) that Gates was the remote operator of a hydraulic crane that was on the back of a trailer. Gates was standing next to a truck parked about 60 feet behind the crane.
Authorities said the driver of a Ford Ranger swerved into a lane which had been closed for the work, striking an orange cone and then Gates.
Adamsville police are investigating the circumstances.
