ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - A Georgia lawmaker is proposing that all schools switch to digital materials from paper textbooks by 2020.
State Sen. John Albers is a Republican from Roswell. He says students need to develop technology skills in school to prepare themselves for higher education and careers. Details still are in the works.
Educators across the country are using more technology in the classroom, and the Obama administration this week committed more funding to expand high-speed internet access and pledged to connect 99 percent of students through their school or library. Other states have tried the deadline model Albers has in mind, including Florida.
Some Georgia districts already are using digital materials. Clarke County middle school teacher Karen Farnsworth says electronic quizzes, videos and other tools help engage students and explain difficult concepts.
