THOMASVILLE, Ga. (WTXL)- Distracted driving is a common cause for motor vehicle accidents in Georgia. Law enforcement officials and many others believe the hands-free driving bill will prevent distracted driving and help save lives.

"We're trying to keep all motorist as safe as possible,"said Major Wade Glover from the Thomasville Police Department. "You can't hold any type of electronic device in your hand, whether it be a iPad, cellphone, computer or anything in your hand while operating a motor vehicle while in the State of Georgia."

According to Thomsaville Police Department, distracted driving is the leading cause of motor vehicle accidents in the State of Georgia.

In May of this year, Governor Nathan Deal signed the Hands Free Driving Bill.

It prohibits anyone from holding electronic devices while driving.

Even at stop signs or red lights, if you are holding an electronic device, you can still get in trouble.

"We will be actively stopping people if we see it," said Major Glover. "If you have an accident or cause an accident because you are a distracted driver you will most likely be cited for that."

The Thomasville Police Department will be giving people a 30 day grace period so they can understand the new law. Officials say they want people to obey the law and stay safe.
