GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) — A former deputy says he was fired from his job at the Hall County Jail for ministering to former inmates.
His commanders say Josh McCuen was violating a policy against fraternizing with inmates or known criminal elements and he had been reprimanded for insubordination.
McCuen told WSB-TV (http://bit.ly/1CJ6eG4 ) he recently started a Bible study group for former inmates and began raising money to put Bibles in every cell. He said a supervisor gave him the choice of resigning or being fired.
The sheriff's department issued a statement saying the supervisor did not make any reference to religious beliefs or actions, but McCuen cited it as a reason for his improper behavior. The department says it has religious services every week and makes Bibles available to inmates who want them.
