GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Gainesville has moved a step closer to allowing medical marijuana dispensaries to set up shop in the city.
City commissioners on Thursday voted to change the city's land development code to allow dispensaries in certain areas zoned for offices, medical services or urban mixed use.
The commission must approve the ordinance a second time for it to become law.
The Florida Department of Health has approved such dispensaries as set forth in the Compassionate Medical Cannabis Act, which authorized low-THC cannabis for certain patients.
Under the law, physicians can authorize marijuana use for cancer patients or other conditions that cause chronic symptoms like muscle spasms or seizures.
