GADSDEN COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - After several months of debate, the Gadsden County Commission voted to move forward with plans for Florida Highway Patrol to build a race track on 109 acres of land on U.S. 90.
FHP will use the speed track to teach state troppers how to speed safely. It would be used by enforcement agencies statewide.
Brenda Holt, chair of Gadsden County Commission, says there was discussion of building the facility in south Florida.
She says she supports having the race track in Gadsden County because of the economic impact.
"We were trying to maintain the economic impact of the Law Enforcement Academy as far as employment, residual incomes that were from that facility," said Brenda Holt, chair of the Gadsden County Commission. "That was the reason for keeping the facility in the area. Also to train good officers."
Holt says the facility will bring transient funds from officers visiting for training.
The FHP track will be located next to the Florida Public Safety Institute.
