MACON, Ga. (AP) — A man jailed two years ago on murder charges has been acquitted by a jury in a 2010 knife slaying in middle Georgia.
The Telegraph of Macon reports (http://bit.ly/1wJTekr ) jurors took less than half an hour Friday to find 40-year-old David Allen Stewart not guilty in the killing of Tony Lord of Lizella.
Prosecutors relied on witness testimony that Stewart, a handyman, came to Lord's home in March 2010 and plunged a knife into his chest after Stewart was ripped off in a drug deal by the victim's son. But defense attorneys seized on conflicting testimony given by three key prosecution witnesses.
The verdict came after a three-day trial. Stewart left the courthouse with his mother crying on his arm. Now free, Stewart said he was "just ecstatic ... happy."
