ATLANTA, Ga. (WTXL)--It's National Flood Safety Awareness Week. Georgia Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens says you should consider a flood policy.
“Purchasing flood insurance is an important consideration for Georgia consumers, even if you think a flood is unlikely in your area,” said Hudgens. “Between 20 and 25 percent of flood claims occur in areas considered medium or low-risk for floods.”
He says a standard flood policy will cover the basic structure, furnace, water heater, air conditioner, and floor surfaces, as well as debris clean-up.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency says the average flood insurance policy costs roughly $650 a year for coverage.
