ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia lawmakers have started their annual 40-day session in Atlanta.
The General Assembly came to order Monday morning amid looming budget issues and an expected debate over lobbying rules.
The first day of the annual legislative session is largely dedicated to formalities. Both chambers will have to appoint new committee leaders, set calendars and adopt chamber rules. The Senate may debate a proposed rule that would cap gifts from lobbyists to lawmakers at $100.
By law, the state Legislature meets for 40 working days. They typically adjourn around early spring.
