GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) — Gainesville's airport is putting in place new guidelines that would allow airplanes four times larger than previously allowed to land there.
The Times reports (http://bit.ly/15SkYYU) that the Georgia Department of Transportation has signed off on the higher weight limits for planes landing there, and forwarded the new limits to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The new weight limits come after Gainesville and Hall County funded a study that tested pavement strength in an effort to determine whether larger aircraft can be allowed.
Following the study, airport manager Terry Palmer said Thursday the airport has raised its maximum weight load to 100,000 pounds for dual-wheel aircraft.
Officials are hoping the change boosts economic development by drawing larger corporate planes.
