TALLAHASSEE, FL. (WTXL) - The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission is asking for county and local governments to submit plans to the Commission on ways to reduce conflicts between Florida Black Bears and humans.

FWC has $825,000 to distribute for programs to help cut down on these interactions that could sometimes be dangerous. Local governments have until October 14th to submit their proposals. Officials say, the programs should include ordinances requiring bear-proof trash cans.

In 2015, Florida held its first bear hunt in 21 years, resulting in more than 300 bears killed. This year, FWC decided against holding another hunt following opposition from residents and environmental groups.
