TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL)--Public housing residents in Tallahassee are getting some help to achieve their dreams.

The Tallahassee Housing Authority has teamed up with the FAMU Small Business Development Center to offer a program aimed at giving residents the skills they need to start up their own businesses.

The executive director of the housing authority, Brenda Williams, says the students learn all about accounting concepts, writing business plans, marketing techniques, and management skills.

Danorris Thomas is one of five people completing the nine-week course.

Thomas wants to open a restaurant.

"It's called Golden Krust Carribean Grill, and it's just something affordable for everyone and this is a college town so I'm trying to market to college kids and do something different," said Thomas.

Brenda Williams says once the graduates get started, the housing authority wants to do business with them.

"We are hopeful that the businesses will gain some experience by contracting with the housing authority for some services, and then take that experience and go out into the community and grow their businesses," said Williams.

A graduation ceremony is planned Monday for those residents completing the program. The Tallahassee Housing Authority plans to have more small business training programs in the future.
