VALDOSTA, Ga. (WTXL) - The funeral is set for a Lowndes County deputy killed in a wreck over the weekend.
Deputy Chris Butler was killed in a head-on collision.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, Deputy Butler was on his way to a domestic call on cat creek road when his squad car was hit by a semi.
Authorities say the semi's driver, Robbie Register of Tifton, pulled the deputy from his car before it went completely up in flames.
Deputy Butler was taken to the South Georgia Medical Center in critical condition where he died.
Those who knew deputy Butler say he was a man who gave up his day job to pursue a career in law enforcement.
The community shared words of comfort for Butler's family and colleagues.
The Valdosta Police Department posted on Facebook, calling Butler the perfect example of the phrase, "law enforcement is a calling".
