Fulton County Approves Uber Rides For Older Residents

Posted

ATLANTA (AP) - Fulton County officials have decided to expand a program that gives older residents Uber rides to and from four senior citizen centers in the county.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (http://on-ajc.com/28IYbVu) the county commission decided Wednesday to spend $10,000 to continue testing the service.

Russell Sellars, vice president of the Friends of Benson senior citizen center, says transportation remains a major issue for older residents. He says that between February and May, 772 rides were given using Uber, and that the program worked "extremely well."

The county has used MV Transportation to provide rides in the past. However, Sellars says the company requires booking two weeks in advance and is often overwhelmed. Uber helps relieve these problems.

Sellars says that if the expanded pilot is successful, he will encourage the county to move $500,000 to alternative ride sharing.
