TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL)-- The world's most powerful electrical testing system was unveiled...right here in our backyard.
Florida State University's Center for Advanced Power Systems (CAPS) unveiled it's new direct current power test system. The new system will give the center the ability to test electrical equipment in real-world conditions, such as lightning storms.
Senior research faculty, Michael Steurer, explains these tests can isolate faults in current systems and fix problems quicker, such as massive power outages.
"When we employ this type of power electronic converter based systems, we will be able to detect and be able to turn off faults quicker and restore the power quicker, so the outage time will be reduced," said Steurer.
It's taken the center 2 and a half years and $3 million to create the 24,000 volt power test system. CAPS was founded 14 years ago and prides itself as the training center for engineers and researchers of the future.
