SUWANNEE COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - Officials say a Florida State student who was airlifted after she drove through standing water on I-10 and lost control of her vehicle is making great strides toward recovery.
The Suwannee County Fire Rescue says that it is rare that they learn the outcome of patients they treat, much less when the patient is from out of town.
On Memorial Day, SCFR says a Florida State student named Marina was making her way from Bradenton to Tallahassee through heavy rain. Marina told crews she had already stopped three times before reaching the Suwannee County area to let the rain ease up.
As Marina continued driving, the rain picked back up. She said she was driving under the speed limit around 6:55 p.m. when she drove through standing water.
That caused her to lose control of her car and it left the road near mile marker 277 on I-10.
When crews arrived, they found a heavily damaged car with Marina being looked after by two doctors who stopped to help her. After being transported to SCFR, Marina was airlifted to a trauma center.
While Marina tells SCFR that she's been through numerous surgeries and still has rehab and therapy ahead of her, she's thankful that the department was there for her on that day.
Officials wrote on Facebook that it was an emotional moment when Marina and her father came to SCFR on Father's Day to collect some of her items, "as her father could have been spending it without her."
SCFR wished Marina luck on her long road to recovery and welcomed her to stop by and visit if she's ever passing through again.
