TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) -- One FSU student is on a mission to end homelessness in Tallahassee, and the organization he started just earned a grant to help reach that goal.

For the past six months, junior Ramon Aleman has been doing more than just helping himself succeed as a college student.

"We're not giving a handout," he said. "We're giving a hand up."

He founded Unhoused Humanity, a locally-based effort to get the city's homeless off the streets.

"There are about 805, and I'd say about 15 percent of those people have income, but just need help with the deposit," Aleman said.

Aleman's family told him his grandfather was homeless for some time before Aleman was born.

"Ever since then, I promised myself that when I was old enough to do something about it, I would," he said.

Aleman is not from Tallahassee. He's actually from Miami, but instead of going home after spring semester this year, he spent his summer at Domi Station, setting up his organization and finding stronger resources.

"What we do is we provide any sort of moving cost, so security deposit, utility deposit and first month's rent," he said.

Unhoused Humanity received a $1,000 grant Monday from Awesome Tallahassee. The organization will use that money to help four families and two individuals.

"When you meet the people that you're able to help place into homes, it's one of the most intense and beautiful experiences you could possibly have," Aleman said. "Every single time, I cry. Every single time."
