TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The student senate at Florida State University will begin hearings to possibly impeach one of its members.
The decision came Wednesday evening after fellow students called for action, saying they're offended by a social media post made by that student officer over the weekend.
Dozens of Florida State students are commenting at the student body senate meeting and all of them are asking for the same thing: that one member of the senate be kicked off for an offensive Instagram post.
The post shows a group of men dressed in ponchos and sombreros. The caption says "We don't pay cover or taxes".
Minority groups on campus say the post mocks them, and they don't want the person who posted representing the student body.
Alyssa Valle of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, FSU, said: "I feel like somebody who's representing the greater whole, which is the entire community, should have unbiased opinions and that post was very biased, very offensive and if you're in a position of leadership you need to know how to stay neutral."
And she's not the only one. Multiple FSU organizations agreed.
At Wednesday's meeting, members of The Hispanic Latino Student Union gave this statement:
"We do not condone the derogatory remarks made by a member of the senate. Approximately one-third of FSU students are minorities; and with this in mind, HLSU would like to encourage the board to remove the senate member."
The student responsible for the post showed up briefly, but left before the meeting started.
This was the fifth meeting he'd missed this year, which would have made him eligible for impeachment anyway.
Michael Garcel of Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, FSU: "These aren't just words that are being said. It's actions that we're taking. We're here to make sure that our words are heard, our actions are met and we're going to demand that he is impeached from the Florida State student senate."
With that in mind, attentions here turn to Friday and the possible impeachment process.
