TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Florida State University researchers are using artificial intelligence to identify and predict new chemical compounds.

It's a move that could change how chemists test and study potential new compounds for any variety of materials, medicines and other products.

Dr. Kevin Ryan, who developed the work, says with this breakthrough it could help the world of science in so many ways.

"In a word, the idea is to create a program that kind of has chemical intuition endowed within it so that we can have a program or a computer kind of learn autonomously from a large volume of chemistry data that we have - so in this case its crystal structures," said Dr. Ryan.

The research is published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
