TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL)--Researchers receive nearly $1.7 million from the National Institutes of Health to study a specific protein in the body believed to cause Alzheimer's Disease.

The team of researchers from Florida State University and the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville will study the structure of the beta- amyloid protein. Scientists believe Alzheimer's happens when the protein forms toxic structures.

The researchers eventually want to make a drug to prevent those structures from forming.

The grant will be divided between Florida State and the Mayo Clinic over the next five years.
