Tallahassee, Fla. (WTXL)--Researchers at Florida State University have made a major breakthrough when it comes to the Zika Virus.
So far, there are over 100 cases of the disease, all travel-related, 47 of those right here in the Sunshine state.
While the Centers for Disease Control says the disease is linked to birth defects in newborns, Scientists over at FSU teamed up with experts from John Hopkins to figure out if that's true and to learn why.
The two found that the virus actually starts to break down cells within three days of exposure.
So even as questions remain about the virus, this discovery quite pivotal when it comes to treatment options.
Experts at both the labs will continue to work alongside each other to investigate other aspects of the disease.
