TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., according to The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Just over 44,000 Americans will die by suicide each year.

The organization 2-1-1 Big Bend says from July 1 of 2017 to June 30 of 2018, they received 45 percent more suicide related calls than the same period the previous year.

An FSU professor will be giving a seminar speech Tuesday at the Tallahassee Senior Center to address the dangers and warning signs of suicide.

Dr. Martin Swanbrow Becker says the best thing you can do is inform the public about the possible signs that someone maybe thinking about committing suicide.

"It's a community effort to look out for each other," said Becker. "Take the chance and show people that you care by checking in and making sure we're O.K. as a community."

The event begins at 6 p.m. and will go until 8 p.m. at the Tallahassee Senior Center.
