TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A man pushing a scooter on a sidewalk ran away from FSU police officers but was caught and arrested for grand theft of a motor vehicle.

Bobby L. Perkins III, 21, of Pompano Beach, remained in the Leon County Detention Center on Thursday on a $5,500 bond. He was arrested Tuesday and also faces a charge of resisting an officer without violence.

On Tuesday, a Florida State University police officer driving south on Stadium Drive toward Lake Bradford saw Perkins pushing the scooter and asked him why, according to a probable cause affidavit. Perkins said he had run out of gas.

The scooter had a busted ignition and lacked a tag.

Perkins said the scooter belonged to a friend who had left town last week, the officer wrote. He was unable to remember the friend's name.

The officer contacted the registered owner of the scooter, who confirmed that it had been stolen from outside his Tallahassee residence.

Perkins fled on foot, but the officers quickly caught him.
