TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A new program at FSU's college of medicine is receiving a national award this weekend for innovative ideas toward Alzheimer's Disease care giving.
The completely free program, called ACTS 2, trains and supports African-American care givers. Participants attend 12 group and one-on-one sessions with teachers who are former caregivers.
They learn how to reduce stress and strengthen care giving skills to prepare for difficult situations.
"You take care of those in need. And for me, it's more than just a job. It's a part of my ministry," said Tomeka Norton-Brown, the ACTS 2 project coordinator. "My ultimate goal is to be there and support people who are in need. And having been a caregiver, I can truly understand."
Norton-Brown adds, around 80 percent of care is provided by African-Americans. The programs trains caregivers across Florida.
