The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a recall alert for peaches, nectarines and plums sold in several states due to possible listeria contamination.
In a statement , the FDA said the fresh fruit, distributed by Yonkers, New York company Jac. Vandenberg, Inc., may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, which is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems.
The FDA said they are recalling 1,727 cartons of fresh peaches, 1,207 cartons of fresh nectarines and 365 cartons of fresh plums.
The FDA said the peaches and nectarines with the PLU stickers (PLU Nos. 4044, 3035, 4378) showing the origin of Chile were affected.
The recalled peaches, nectarines and plums sold at Aldi are packaged in a 2-pound bag with the brand Rio Duero and EAN Nos. 7804650090281, 7804650090298, 7804650090304, the FDA said.
The FDA said the affected nectarines sold at Costco are packaged in a 4-pound plastic clamshell with the brand Rio Duero and EAN No. 7804650090212.
The FDA said consumers who have purchased fresh peaches, nectarines and plums are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at compliance@jacvandenberg.com.
