TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - On Thursday, March 18, 2015 the Florida Veterans Foundation, Inc. will host a free BBQ cookout for local homeless veterans. It will run from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. behind the American Legion Hall Post #13 at Lake Ella.
In addition to receiving a hot meal and being able to sign up for Star Metro's low-income Veterans' bus pass, homeless veterans will also have a chance to pre-register for the 3rd annual Homeless Veterans Stand Down, taking place April 24-26, 2015. Pre-registering will help ensure access to legal services and help homeless Veterans pre-qualify for permanent housing.
According to a 2013 report by the Florida Department of Children and Families’ Council on Homelessness approximately 16 percent of the overall homeless population within Florida is Veterans.
Organizers say the purpose of the Stand Down is to help get veterans back on their feet and off the street with a job and in permanent housing. Go to www.NorthFloridaStandDown.org for more information, to register or to volunteer.
