QUINCY, Fla. (WTXL) - 33 days into the ongoing government shutdown, many parents, working without pay, some struggling to get by.

That's why one childcare center in Quincy started a new service to help families affected by the shutdown.

Money is going out and not coming in for federal workers. And Five Stars Learning Academy in Quincy is providing a little relief in a big way, offering free childcare for any families affected by the shutdown.

"Someone came and aided me and helped me at the time I needed assistance, so now I want to give back to the community and help those who need it in this time of need," said Patty Ward, Owner and Director of Five Stars Learning Academy.

The cost of childcare can add up to at least $400 a month and thanks to Five Stars, that's one less thing federal workers need to worry about during the shutdown.

"We're hoping that it relieves some of their burdens. Of course, people have mortgages, car notes, insurances, light bills so to continue to go to work and provide us services, they need peace of mind with their child's care," said Teaira Smith, Chief Financial Officer of Five Stars Learning Academy.

Children are excited to learn about science, math, and languages, while the littlest ones focus on their sensory and gross motor skills.

And now, 30 seats are open for children of federal workers for as long as necessary.

"It's not only just for our children, but for our parents as well," said Smith. "We just offer a big host of love to them and we're excited just to be able to offer these services to the federal workers here in Gadsden County."

If you're a parent who is impacted by the shutdown, Five Stars Learning Academy is offering free childcare Monday through Friday.
