FRANKLIN COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - A woman is facing charges after several inmates were hospitalized from smoking spice she smuggled inside the Franklin Correctional Institution via her body.

Franklin County Sheriff A.J. 'Tony' Smith said several inmates were hospitalized Monday after ingesting the drugs.

Deputies believe the inmates smoked K-2 (also known as spice or synthetic marijuana) and had an adverse reaction to the drug. As a result, some were hospitalized briefly.

Sheriff Smith says one inmate is still in the ICU in Tallahassee while another is at Weems Memorial Hospital.

Over the weekend, the sheriff says a woman was arrested at Franklin Correctional Institution for bringing in contraband.

She was then charged and brought to Franklin County Jail. While in the jail, the woman had more unspecified contraband concealed inside her body that was not found during a strip search.

That contraband, according to Sheriff Smith, was then distributed to other inmates who smoked it and began to have a negative reaction. Personnel administered CPR to the affected inmates before they were hospitalized.

The woman who smuggled in the contraband has been charged.
