COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) — A Fort Benning soldier has been charged in connection with a fatal crash on a bridge that left another soldier dead.
News outlets report that 26-year-old Justin Prohaska was arrested Friday and charged with second-degree homicide by vehicle after the death of Command Sgt. Maj. Thomas Roy Morgan on Tuesday.
In a report, police say Prohaska was driving on the Oglethorpe Bridge when he struck Morgan's vehicle from behind after Morgan switched lanes to avoid a stalled pickup truck in front of him. Morgan's vehicle careened over the bridge, and Morgan died from his injuries a few hours later.
Prohaska says he had slammed on his brakes and swerved to avoid striking the stalled truck.
Prohaska also faces one count each of following too closely and failure to maintain lane.
