LEON CO., Fla. (WTXL) -- A  former Tallahassee police chief is officially in the running for Leon County Sheriff.

Walt McNeil filed the paperwork on Thursday.

He served as the Tallahassee police chief for ten years. He was also the police chief of the Quincy Police Department and has worked more than 35 years in Leon County.

He's also spent time as the Secretary of the Department of Juvenile Justice and Department of Corrections.

Sheriff Mike Wood took over the position after long-time Sheriff Larry Campbell died back in December.
