TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) -- A longtime community leader has been appointed to a federal rail working group.
Former Tallahassee Mayor John Marks will represent the Tallahassee and the entire region in the Gulf Coast Rail Working Group (GCRWG).
That's a group headed up by the U.S. Secretary of Transportation. They're focusing on restoring passenger rail service along the New Orleans-Orlando corridor, and then reporting those finding to Congress.
Marks will join 30 representatives from the Federal Railroad Administration, Amtrak, the States along the route, and the Southern Rail Commission.
Mayor Andrew Gillum applauded the appointment, saying in a release, "We worked to get former Mayor Marks appointed to this body because we know his passionate and commitment to this issue, and the wealth of knowledge he could bring to this effort. Securing Tallahassee representation on this working group is a tremendous step forward for rail service in this community, and ensures that we are putting ourselves in the best position possible to have an influential seat at the decision-making table."
Marks says he's honored to continue his service to the City of Tallahassee, and is looking forward to the fight for the return of rail service in the Capital City.
