SARASOTA, FL (WWSB) - A former Florida urologist is accused of telling a patient he had a serious form of prostate cancer, but investigators say he made the whole thing up.

Ronald Wheeler, 71, practiced medicine until losing his license for malpractice due to unrelated cases in 2017.

"Dr. Wheeler instilled fear in his victim. his victim was convinced he had a very aggressive form of prostate cancer, he kept that process up for a year. This man was scared to death, literally," said Sarasota Police Civilian Investigator Michael Harrell.

Police charged Wheeler with Scheme to Defraud. He has been released on $50,000 bond.  His attorney, Derek Byrd, refused comment.
