LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. -- Sarasota County has approved zoning for a Lakewood Ranch-based medical marijuana company.

AltMed plans to open a growing, processing, and dispensing operation for medical marijuana. The company’s CEO and Executive Chairman are both former pharmaceutical executives.

AltMed plans to build a facility east of I-75 that includes a 25,000 square foot indoor growing area, and a 7500 square-foot outdoor growing area.

However, AltMed will only build the facility if the medical marijuana referendum passes, and the company is awarded a medical cannabis license from the state.

AltMed is in the middle of a competitive process to become one of five Florida licensees.

Florida voters will vote on legalizing medical marijuana in November. Proposed Ballot Amendment #2 requires a 60% approval for it to pass.

You can join a debate over the controversial amendment at a forum later this month, when the league of women voters of Manatee County hosts a discussion on the issue.

Speakers who are both for and against legalizing medical marijuana will be there. It will take place at the Bradenton Women's Club at 1705 Manatee Avenue West on September 15th, at 11:30am.
