Tampa Tax Fraud 'Queen' to be Resentenced in Federal Court

Posted

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — A federal prisoner who helped make Tampa famous for stolen identity tax refund fraud will be resentenced.

Rashia Wilson is scheduled to appear in federal court Thursday.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that an appellate court decided a judge made technical errors when ordering her to prison for 21 years back in 2013.

Defense attorney Andrew Greenlee noted in a recent sentencing memorandum that Wilson, now 29, entered prison with a 7th grade education and has since obtained her high school equivalency diploma.

Federal prosecutors said Wilson once blew $90,000 in public money on an Audi and $30,000 on a birthday party for a 1-year-old, after stealing identities to file fraudulent claims for tax refunds.

Prosecutors say Wilson dubbed herself the queen and first lady of tax fraud.
