SARASOTA, Fla. -- Sarasota Police could soon be going high tech. The department is looking into providing body mounting video cameras for its officers to wear to document arrests.
The small cameras would be clipped on to the officer’s hat, glasses or uniform.
In published reports, Chief Bernadette DiPino is said to be seeking to buy dozens of body cameras, and would like her officers to begin using them later this year.
The city commission will vote Monday whether to accept a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to pay for the equipment.
This past June, city leaders gave the okay for SPD to purchase 24 body cameras through a $36,000 grant. The on-officer camera is called Axon Flex, made by Taser.
ABC 7's Bobeth Yates will have more on this story tonight on ABC 7 News.
