SARASOTA, FL-The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office has arrested a Venice couple who falsely reported they were kidnapped at gunpoint and forced to make purchases on a stolen debit card.

On Monday, 37-year-old William Clifford and 39-year-old Tammy Landry, who live with Landry's mother at 540 Plantation Road, went to the Sheriff's Office south county location to report their ordeal. Detectives interviewed them separately under oath on Tuesday and noticed a number of inconsistencies in their stories.

Clifford and Landry eventually admitted smoking four or five rocks of crack cocaine and paid their supplier by buying things he needed with the debit card that was stolen from Landry's 61-year-old mother. So far, investigators found five fraudulent transactions totaling $232.

Clifford and Landry were arrested and charged with Making a False Report to Law Enforcement and Scheme to Defraud.
