GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - A 46-year-old man is being treated at a Gainesville hospital after a shootout with Alachua County Sheriff's deputies.

The shooting happened Tuesday shortly after two deputies spotted Yowab Ben-Israel on a bicycle. He matched the description of a man who had just robbed a Gainesville post office.

Sheriff's spokesman Art Forgey says the deputies followed the man to a shopping center.

The Gainesville Sun (http://bit.ly/1E515XI ) reports witnesses told investigators they saw Ben-Israel pull a gun and point it at a deputy.

Forgey says he doesn't know how many shots were fired, or who shot first. Ben-Israel was hit several times and was taken to a hospital in stable condition. Neither the deputies nor bystanders were injured.

The shooting is being investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
