WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A South Florida man has been sentenced to life in prison for fatally shooting another man during a bar fight.
A Palm Beach County judge sentenced Luis Rios on Friday. He was convicted last month of first-degree murder. A previous conviction and life sentence for the same crime was overturned because of faulty jury instructions.
Authorities say Rios fatally shot Jose Cruz Feliciano and wounded two other men in 2010 outside La Raza nightclub in West Palm Beach. The Palm Beach Post reports that one of the men had punched Rios earlier in the evening, and Rios' attorneys claimed he was acting in self-defense when he shot them later.
Prosecutors say Rios had plenty of time to leave the club after the initial attack and rejected pleas from his friends to get in a car with them.
