Lawsuit calls Florida school voucher program unconstitutional

Posted

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- A lawsuit filed Thursday by the Florida Education Association, the Florida PTA and others, calls the Sunshine State's expanding school voucher program unconstitutional.

In question: The Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program, which provides scholarships to thousands of low-income school children who use the money to leave failing public schools in favor of attending private and/or charter schools.

Critics worry that the program will siphon money away from education, while defenders argue that the money that pays the scholarships actually comes from corporate donations and not the state's treasury. The donating companies receive tax breaks for the money donated, which critics point out still effects the state's budget.

ABC 7's Ray Collins is covering this story and will have much more tonight during our 5 p.m. broadcast.
