MIAMI (AP) - Miami City Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones can't seek a third term in office.
A Florida District Court of Appeal ruled Wednesday that Spence-Jones is barred by the city's charter from seeking a third consecutive term. Appealing a lower court's decision, she had argued that term limits didn't apply because of her lengthy suspension from the city commission.
In 2010, Spence-Jones was removed from office by then-Gov. Charlie Crist after she was charged with bribery and grand theft. But a jury acquitted her of bribery, the grand theft charges were dropped and she returned to the city commission.
Reverend Richard Dunn then filed a lawsuit, claiming that an opinion from the city attorney that Spence-Jones could run again because she didn't serve two full terms was flawed and unconstitutional.
