STUART, Fla. (AP) - Gov. Rick Scott is joining Sen. Joe Negron for a tour of part of the St. Lucie River to access the environmental impact of water being released from Lake Okeechobee.
Scott is touring the area Tuesday afternoon. This comes after the South Florida Water Management tentatively approved a plan for the Central Everglades Planning Project. The project would divert more than 65 billion gallons of Lake Okeechobee water south each year rather than east toward the St. Lucie Estuary and west to the Caloosahatchee Estuary.
The governor will discuss concerns with the Army Corps of Engineers' maintenance of the lake's dike system and possible solutions.
U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson said last week the Central Everglades Planning Project will be crucial to the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon's futures.
